Jose G. Alvarez was born in Medellin, Colombia on December 8, 1933, to Geraldo Alvarez and Laura Rosa Estrada. He was the husband of Blanca (Quintero) Alvarez. Gustavo, as he was known to his close friends and family, was the oldest of four children. At a young age Gustavo distinguished himself in the textile industry in Colombia. His work ethic, desire to take care of his family and constant fundamental core beliefs, led him to lead his family's migration to America in 1969.
Gustavo was an avid cyclist and dreamt of being professional. But the love of his family led him to other endeavors in America. He worked in the textile industry here in America also, for several years. He also enjoyed going out to dinner with family and friends.
Besides his wife, he leaves daughters, Leidyana Tilano of Cumberland and Gloria Alvarez of Johnston, two sons, Walter Alvarez of Colombia and Eduardo Alvarez of Connecticut. He also leaves a sister Bertha Hernandez of Central Falls and 8 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.
His family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his doctors, Dr. Hector Ochiro and Dr. Thomas Noonan for the excellent care they provided Gustavo and a special Thank You to Dr. Elkin Estrada for his supported love and friendship he showed the family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in his parish church, Holy Spirit Church at 1030 Dexter Street in Central Falls on Tuesday at 9:30 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Committal Prayers will be said in the Chapel of Hope and Memory at Swan Point Cemetery, Blackstone Blvd. Providence.
