João Baptista Dias Boaventura, 62, of Cumberland passed away suddenly at his home on Jones Street on Wednesday, August 31, 2021. Born in 1959, in the small town of João Afonso, Ribeira Grande, on the Island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde, João was the son of Claudio Xavier Monteiro and Teresa Maria Dias, he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Vital José Boaventura.
After residing on the Island of São Vicente, Cape Verde for many years as a taxi driver, João came to the United States to pursue better opportunities a little over 20 years ago, and was a proud man, who worked hard to find something that fed his passion. After living with his extended family for a handful of months, he joined the Three Flags Bakery crew in Central Falls. He enjoyed this work and focused on sending funds back home to his seven children in Cape Verde. João is described as a respectful and generous man, who would give his shirt off his back for almost anyone and made sure to give the most to those whom he loved the most.
He enjoyed watching his favorite Portuguese soccer team, Porto, on television and spending time quality time with his friends, particularly, Armindo Assunção, who, because of their close relationship, was jokingly called João’s dad.
Predeceased by his father, João is survived by his mother, six siblings: Arlindo Dias Boaventura, Maria da Cruz Boaventura, José Vital Boaventura, Bernardina Dias Boaventura, António Dias Boaventura, and Manuel Vital Boaventura; seven children: Evandro dos Santos Dias Boaventura, Idelson dos Santos Dias Boaventura, Isaurinda Neves Dias, Karina Neves Boaventura, Valdir Neves Boaventura, Lucidalva Patrícia Neves Boaventura, and Anderson Boaventura, and many grandchildren, besides a great number of friends, who cared deeply for him. He will be sorely missed.
